Offer from Thompson and Morgan - too good to be true?
« on: February 03, 2013, 09:54 »
I've received an email from T&M offering £50 worth of plants for £10. I am always wary of this type of offer and reading the 'small print' they are small plug / super plug plants. Anyone else seen this offer and, if so, worth a punt??
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

Two ways to know if it is a good offer

1. Check the cost of p&p

2.Do you want/need these plants?

They often have very good bargains, but I have to say that my personal experience of plants from T&M has been that they often deliver later than stated, and some plants are not in tip top condition

I've taken up this offer as I think it is worth a punt. I have ordered from them in the past and as teh previous poster said they do takes ages to dispatch the plants but all that I have ordered have been reasonable quality.

Lucky you.

I could post my complaint picture, empty pots as the plants arrived rotted off.

the P&P always makes me so mad........ £4.95. Almost half the cost of the 'offer'.
Im getting a bad vibe about this so might pass on it.

Thumper - would be really interested in what you get delivered.

Have you seen the cost of royal mail? Its so expensive to send out as a business now.

I won't touch anything by T&M after appalling quality of plants 2 years running.  It wasn't just me as two of the people I work for had the same problem - half the plants arrived dead and the other half in such poor condition that they took the whole season to recover.  In most cases, the time and effort involved in bringing the 'cheap' or 'free' plants up to reasonable standard was such that we would have been better off buying full price stuff from our local garden centre.  Complaints resulted in being told that it was our fault for not looking after the plants properly - when I pointed out that I had an NDH certificate so should know how to look after common garden plants, they backed down, but the replacements they sent were almost as bad as the originals.  Another thing to watch if the offer is for perennials is that you can often end up with tiny plants that take years to do anything - I fell for an offer that was 'half the price' of what I would have to pay at the garden centre - but at the garden centre I would have had a plant in a 3-ltr pot; the special offer was a newly rooted cutting!

Oh dear - I've ordered some stuff last week, although it is flowers rather than veg plants. I'll keep you informed. Bit worried now.

I have had 6 hellebores delivered from Hayloft plants which are lovely.

Look on the bright side - some people must be happy with their orders or T&M would be out of business!  Just inspect your order very carefully and don't be afraid to complain loudly if it's not in great condition.

Well to add some balance - I ordered trailing geraniums from them a couple of years ago and I was happy with them, they were all viable plants, arrived on time and grew well.

The Fuschias I ordered did arrive later than stated so were a little slow off the mark so to speak but all did well in the end.

I ordered plug trailing pansies (winter ones)  from them that year too and again I got 42 viable plants (out of 42 ordered) and they did really really well, I was pleased with them (much better than the ones I got from Aldi this year which have been a  total dissapointment - as shame as all my other Aldi purchases have been good).

I did order some pinks and despite my care I only have 2 left out of 5 ordered, 3 died in the first year.  The remaining 2 looked very pretty last year and flourished!

Prices aren't too bad if you pick a good offer and do the Tesco Clubcard thing.

Hannah :)
