Rhubarb (again)
« on: January 30, 2013, 17:44 »
I've potted up my 4 rhubarb plants this afternoon as ground not ready to plant anything yet. Trouble is..2 of them have no obvious differences to tell which way is up!! If they're upside down, will they cope and correct their own growth eventually (like the bean experiments), or will they die?

They usually have an obvious pointy bit of root or a flat cut where the root has been sliced across.

does this help

I don't know how they'd cope if they are really upside down. If you really can't tell then I'd be inclined to leave them on the surface until they make some buds.

Mine lol nothing like those!  Just rectangular'ish lumps with spade cut flat edges most the way round! There were slightly more 'ruffled' edges which I've gone with as the tops. Just hope I've guessed right!

Woohoo! Some signs of life :D
One is definitely throwing up a new shoot/stalk, two more are looking promising and I 'think' are trying to throw up a shoot, which just leaves the last one. I am very hopeful tho as I am sure is right way up looking at them all together. Love it :D

just lay them in some soil/compost and wait for shoots to appear - then you will know which way up to plant them.  I just wish for rhubarb here - could you post some to me please?  I will happily pay postage:)
Now what shall I do today?

I have a horrible feeling I dug out my rhubarb.  I only inherited it last year when we took on another half plot and there was a lovely big plant there.  When it died back I did a lot of weeding and then turned the whole area over with a big garden fork and I have a feeling I might have dug it out...   AAAaarggghh!!   :(

Well I suppose it's possible but Rhubarb grow to a goodly size (in the ground that is)  and I've heard that they're the devil to dig up.

Personally I would be surprised if anyone could 'accidentally' dig up a rhubarb plant - unless it was a very young one.
