Leek recommendation?
« on: January 29, 2013, 19:35 »
It's decision time again. I  grew Musselburg and Zermatt last year - still lifting them. Not bad but the Musselburg aren't as firm in the stalk as I'd hoped, although that's maybe down to the bad weather.

Just thought I'd try something different this year.

Any recommendations for growing here in the (hopefully) sunny south of England??

Thanks.

I grow Bulgarian Giant - that seems to do well for me  :)

I usually grow musselburgh and I am reasonably pleased this season but occasional stalks have been soft and an odd one has rotted -- I think it is the excess damp as they always do well for me, stand well and crop at the size the head of kitchens likes. This year trying both Longbow and Toledo both from Moles.

Zermatt are good for an early crop and Winter Giant stand well even in temps down to -18.

Leeks are very hardy but, like a lot of things, they suffered with the weather last year so don't give up on Musselburgh just yet.

Thanks everyone.

I still have some mussleburg seeds so I may go for some of those along with bulgarian giant and maybe bleu de solaise which ive read about. Just to compare.

Cheers.

Late, but I use Musselbrurgh too.

I put them in around May last year and I'm still pulling them now. They've survived the winter fine.

My Musselburgh didn't do well last year so I am trying three this time.
Oarsman,
Lancelot,
&
Bleu de Solaise.

Thanks but why did you say 'late'?

Late answering, after you'd already said your thanks, I think.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

LEEKS Oarsman - I suffered a lot with rust the previous season so I tried these - Was a bit late planting them out ( mid July ) but I am getting a good crop - bit on the small side ( 1" Diameter )  - but not much rust . Taste OK

I grew some Megaton this year. Will grow more next. Not sure if you can buy them in the UK, but if you can, give them a try. Planted out in early April. Good size early on. Could have started picking in late summer but didn't need them then. Am still picking now. No rust, despite some damp weather this winter.

I can recommend Bleu de Solaise.   Very hardy and doesn't bolt.
