Organic cabbage family
« on: January 24, 2013, 06:59 »
So..... I have stopped spraying gunk on my garden.  I have noticed lots of new life out there in the last couple of years.  The predators are doing a good job of comtroling the pests but I'm afraid of trying anything in the cabbage family, they just seem to get so eaten!  How do you grow bug free cole crops without spray???
I eat local because I can.

Fleece, or very fine mesh, sold over here under various names, one being "Enviromesh".

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I drape Enviromesh over my brassicas and hold it down with bricks and lengths of wood etc, leaving enough mesh for the plants to grow. Enviromesh is very good stuff and it can be washed!  :D  I buy a piece when I'm flush  :D

Sadly we can't get Enviromesh here in Canada, but fabric shop 'tulle' or 'mesh' will do the same job for one season. If you can get them (a meshy wedding fabric) on sale, even better. I can't grow a single brassica crop without it.

Can the pesky butterflies get their ovipositor (egg-laying thingy) through the Enviromesh?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
