Well worth making the sacrifice!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I got 2kg of Charlottes from the local garden centre yesterday. Got them out of the bag and on a tray in the conservatory tonight. A lot of them already had a good inch of sprout on them.

Do you mean the ones you bought are like that or other ones in the shop ?

I think that shoozie is hinting at the fact that a good inch of sprout at the moment is not necessarily good.

It would imply that they're been stored somewhere a bit too warm and lacking in light.

However an inch is not too excessive and I think you've given them a good home just in time!

You're right DD - that's what I was thinking.   (Though it did spur me on to check a pack of Ambo that got posted to me in December - which are just showing signs of sprouting but will be laid out tomorrow! )

I mentioned an eBay seller earlier in the thread - tubers arrived in great condition, although half of them are very small (golf ball). The guy combines postage adding 35p for each extra 10 tubers so reasonable against the likes of t&m...

23p per seed potato?

I'd be looking elsewhere.

Forgot to add postage.

Amended price is 42.4p per spud.

 T & M are doing 40 tubers for £8.99 with free post if you're quick = 22p a spud.

But I'd still be looking locally.

Ended up getting casblanca and arran pilot! The pentland javelin were very small.
They are sold as pick and mix for £3.75 a bag. I got 10 of each of the above.
The last lot were  charlotte and belle de fontenay and I got 25 of those in the bag so not bad value for money all round.
Just need to wsh my coat now s the sleeves got dusty fishing out the good ones

Thanks for all your help

Frankly I am surprised seed has not been dearer than it is in view of last years weather ,and the price of eating spuds round here . I certainly know one farmer who put in a 40 acre field in march had it washed out at the beginning of april replanted and is now watching it rot in the field as it was too wet to harvest !! I am sure there are many doing the same :(

I thought small seed spuds were supposed to be good for first earlies. Didn't I read somewhere that small seed spuds are more likely to give lots of small spuds, so perfect for first earlies?

I've used Pentland Javelin for the past 3 seasons, we always get a really good, heavy crop and we don't seem to have any issues (as yet, touch wood, etc!).

Just bought mine from Melbicks Garden Centre, £1.99 to fill a bag, I got 19 good size seed potatoes in the bag (the 20th would have been mashed!)
Acquired a third of a plot in January 2011 which was extended to three quarters in December 2011. Managed by myself and my 6 year old son.
