The bottom line, I'm afraid is, that without facilities to deal with them, they've been started too early.

I've got 2 greenhouses, one heated, one not, but the leeks still won't be started until March.

"From January" is different to "must sow in January".

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Like Jim's the 3 varieties I have say Sow from January, one has sow from January (Indoors). Another has just January and February for indoor sowing, they are saying no later in the year for indoor sowing.
And it is January after all, pretty close to the end of it now.

As said the results from last year of sowing at the accepted time was that most were thrown simply because they were far too small even to chop up into a stirfry. So when all 3 say sow indoors in Janurary I decided that Janurary it was for an early start.

Also it is 30-40 seeds, hardly going to bring western civilisation crashing down.

You'll also end up throwing them if you don't have the right facilities for growing on early sowings.

Western civilisation is not the topic under discussion!

There's a big difference in climate across even this relatively small island which I suppose gives the seed companies the excuse to suggest a wider range of sowing times (both earliest and latest) than will necessarily be sensible for some growers.

Unless you are experienced and have facilities for compensating for too little or too much warmth and/or light it's best not to sow at either extreme of the recommended timeframe on the seed packet.

My leeks will be sown early in March, and all being well will be just about ready to plant out when I am starting to harvest the first early potatoes in late June.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I'm with Yorkie.

Use propagators sparingly. I've managed over 40 years without one!
I do find one to be useful for sweetcorn as I do not have an airing cupboard.

I found the airing cupboard too warm. Take your eye off them and they've chitted too much - easy to forget them if they're out of sight.

I just use the kitchen window now, Mrs Digger will understand!

They've really come on since that pic.  I just worry that I've started them way too early. The pack did say sow from January, so I did

Still don't know what to do with them

As long as the temperature is above freezing they will be perfectly fine outside in a sheltered but bright spot. Just cover with clear plastic if rain is forecast and at night if there is to be a touch of frost. If a sharp frost is expected bring them inside overnight.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

Yours are 3 to 4 times bigger then mine, about 15-20 of my Blue Solaise have germinated and not one of the Musselborough.

Hopefully this year I will get something bigger then thin spring onion size that was all that came up last year.

At the risk of repeating DD's advice -- get them somewhere bright and cool as soon as possible

Leave them growing, watering if needed, until they are around pencil thick, which should be around early June

Then plant them in dibbed holes so they are up to their armpits, and water them in. A dash of fish, blood & bone will see them right.

Eat when ready --- October/November time

They'll be happy in the ground all winter

Hope that helps
