rent on allotments
« on: January 21, 2013, 13:00 »
Hi I have just had this years rent demand for my allotment and it's gone up from £31 to £80 when I  asked why as my allotment was not the biggest size I was told they had estimated the size and therefore the rental, from an aerial picture on googal (very professional --not)and my plot went from fence to fence. as there is a border around my plot which I cannot use because there are shrubs and scrub I am paying for land that is unuseable. Beware the councils are trying to decrease the allotments by this devious charge. >:(

perhaps take it up with maybe your local councillor?  Seems wrong that you are expected to pay rent on ground that you cannot use

Measure it acurately, take pictures of the unusable bits ans then go and 'discuss' it with them.

Failing that you'll have to dig out the shrubs yourself so you can use that bit - that's what I had to do on one side of mine.

That seems a bit of a jump  I'd get out the tape measure, and also point out that google maps/earth etc are years out of date. I looked at my plot on google earth and the photo was from 2007.

Just to add, I had a look on Googleearth and our allotments don't feature at all.
And they started Oct 2008.

I was in the middle of getting my shared plot re-organised so I recognise the image when I was at a particular stage - that would make it March/April 2007  ;)

W've had some large increases over the past few years, since i've had my plot we have had 9%, 18% then 22% increases and this year i'm expecting the rise to be around the 25% mark, councils now see them as money generating assets

That sounds a huge amount for a council plot most of them near me are £30 and the private one I'm getting is 60

My council assumed the plots were all 250m2 and half plots thus 125m2 - when I measured mine it was 75m2 It's in the corner of the site and not rectangular, so I measured it and only pay for what I've actually got.

My brother in law has a rectangular plot also 75m2 - I have just found out that no others have questioned the area and price and they have been charged for larger areas than they actually have!!

£20.55 + £2.92 Water = £23.47 - Due Date 1st October

£0.274 /m2 Basic
£0.173 /m2 Concession - Over 60 or in receipt of benefits
£0.039 /m2 Water

I may have to suggest to them that they actually measure their plots and check their bills

No WC on the site

My plot is 100ft x 30ft and I pay £52 per year which includes water but nothing else.
I think it's great value.
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

Its interesting how rents can vary so much in different counties and even in the same area. Mine is 6 perches (presumably a full size plot) was 32 last year, now 45. Includes water supply nearby and a porta-toilet. So not too bad I suppose, considering its just 20 minutes walk from my home. However my neighbour whose plot is behind me, he is a senior citizen and pays only 18 for a same size plot! How's that?!! He has had his plot for more than 30 years tho.

Pensioners often get reduced rents, I get mine rent free :)
