Draw knife, that's the thing I thought of but couldn't remember its name. ::)

I'm going with spokeshave with the bare tang bent out of shape for two reasons:

1) Ice and Yaxley have already suggested it and I think they're probably right (even though the thought never crossed my mind.)

2) Alby luckily doesn't know the true answer so no-one can tell us we're talking out of our thingies!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I think the wear on the blade looks as if it was used on something harder than beets. :)

I think it is constant sharpening that wears the blade down, not so much what it cuts

One chops the roots and soil off the beet so they do wear.

It does seem to have the same wear pattern (more at one end) as the turnip knife.

Well you learn something everyday or so they say.

As someone has already said "a drawknife" like this one: Drawknife was used for removing bark when preparing new timber.

Easily mistaken... I thought.

Spokeshave for certain!

Used to get fence posts into some sort of order and shape without too much bark.

This one has been adapted to making a spike for getting stones out of horses hooves...

Here a pic of my beet knife and a link to a stake peeling draw knife, its the same style peeler as we used on the forestry  commission .I guess the beet knife could be utilised for peeling a few stakes but when one had to peel thousands as we did then one needs the proper tool.
By the time  power peelers came to our beat   I had left :(

What I was trying to say was: beet knife = yes but easily mistaken for a broken handled drawknife...I thought.

Game and match to smud6ie!!

with respect to smud6ie I suggested it was a turnip knife several postings earlier .....
In north Lincolnshire we perhaps also called it a mangel knife or beet knife.
