Why would they full up?  Isn't the bottom of one bottle cut off and the whole bottle slotted over the top of the one underneath, or am I seeing it wrongly?

That is awesome, I wish I had the skills to do something like that.  My neighbours think I'm bonkers rifling through their recycling boxes to get bottles for cloches and jars for jam as it is, it'd take me ages to get that many, what a fantastic idea though.

Ok, I'm officially sad and mad.

I've just been cutting open a 2 litre drinks bottle, you get a plastic sheet 20cm x 30cm - A4 size-ish.

If you use a hole punch on all sides and lace these things together like a poor suit of armour, it's feasable that a smaller construction (poss one seasons worth, could be made to surround out door peppers/chillis etc.

Or you could just buy a roll of polythene I guess.

Just a thought.......

Do you have too much time on your hands Sally?  It does sound like a good idea though.

even sadder.......they'd fit a treat on an old 4 sided clothes airer, as the depth of the sheet is just larger than one rung.....and an airer has about 8 inches of leg to poke in the ground for stability.

Have moved this thread to Design and Construction.

I have used pop bottles stacked up on bamboo canes for quite a few years now.  Mainly as windbreaks / topless cloches.

Tempted to try a larger structure along these lines.
    1. Fill 8ft canes with pop bottles
    2. Fit filled canes horizontally between two loops of alkathene pipe
    3. Polythene sheet or filled canes vertically to form end sections
Anyone tried it?  Basically a larger / higher version of the Geoff Hamilton cloche but using bottles instead of sheet polythene.  Easy to anchor to ground by driving in deep stakes with a section of dowel attached for alkathene to slip over / screw down.

See http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/today_in_your_garden/geoffhamilton_index.shtml for Geoff's video
