Quite, and with the cold snap forecast it's totally the wrong time to be thinking of early sowing!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I wonder what it advises on the backs of the packets.  Restraint I shouldn't wonder  ;)

The seeds of patience!

 Definitely the best seeds to sow just now!  I'm making do with some comfortable armchair gardening, with Geoff Hamilton and others!

Just onion seeds this week, and shallot bulbs once I find my tall module flat.

Soon to locate the turnips, swede and peppers and start them off, maybe carrots direct in the ground.

I've tried not to, but I really have to specifically ask, why 4 to 5 months early with the swede?

Only onions, sweet peas and some winter lettuce for me so far as seeds go.

Got some caulies, celery, celeriac and broad beans for next month and will maybe start peppers towards the end of Feb.

Made a decision not to do chillies this year as I have loads dried or made into paste from this year (and the year before :D

With Christmas and the shortest day out of the way and a new year just started it's all too easy to get carried away and start things off way too early - just remember that for tender crops most parts of the UK can only count on about 4 frost-free months outdoors in summer.

Temperature-wise, what doesn't actually kill your plants will usually set them back, and sometimes they never fully recover from it even when weather conditions improve.

Germination as well as actual growth is affected by cold - now is perhaps a good time to remind those who haven't seen it of the Soil Temperature Germination Table (my soil temperature is currently 3C according to the local weather station!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Despite having a very large heated propagator, I'm sowing nothing until March. After too many years of leggy, drawn seedlings going to waste because it's been too cold to transplant, my seeds are staying in their packets for another six weeks

That's blooming early!

Parsnips & carrots not till April - swede May/June.

I like to give the parsnips an early start in mid-March. I sow in root-trainers and plant out.
It's a bit of 'faffing' around for a couple of weeks early start, but gets them going, gives me something positive to do  and I have no thinning to do after they are planted out. The trick is to get them into the ground before the tap root reaches the bottom of the container. It's worked well for me and delivered good parsnips in the past.
Little by little a bird makes its nest!
