Raspberry canes on a north facing wall/fence?

Hi all,

Simple question i supose, (if you know the answer) can you grow raspberry canes on a north facing wall/fence.
I ask because they are native to Scotland, (i believe) and it tends to be colder up there!

Agree with Mum - they're pretty long suffering but lack of light will affect them more than the lack of warmth.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

When you say not a great crop, how much of not a great crop are we talking as i have enough room for around 4 plants!
I have a 12ft fence thats north facing that was all, i could have put them on that fence with no real faff.

quantifying is difficult - but only about a third of the crop when compared to harvest once moved into the sun.

I think they grow wild on the edges of woodland so don't like complete shade, which is what mine got when a wire fence was replaced with a wooden panel fence  ::)

If your fence gets a couple of hours sun they should be ok  ;)

Hmmmmmm,

It does get around 4 hours of first morning sun a day!
Im garden growing at the moment and am trying to make the most of it so this expance of fence it precious.

The girls myself on SWMBO like rasps but the shop bought ones are not the best in quality and are rather expensive so even if we could get enough from 4 plants to suply us enough for some each maybe 3 times a week that would be good.
