earlies... seeds
« on: January 09, 2013, 10:56 »
Ive been pondering this and just have to ask.  In my veg growing books and  seed catalogues there are peas, carrots, potatoes, all sorts titles earlies.  What does this mean, will they grow faster than others and be ready earlier, so do we sow them earlier and how do you know when they are ready?

sorry but I know some of you will have the answers.

many thanks

early varieties probably mean shorter growing season that are lifted early for maximum best result

If they take less time to grow, why wouldnt we always use earlies and just keep planting them to get more produce over a longer period?

Maincrop varieties are used for storing over winter - think about early potatoes and maincrop potatoes or carrots.  Before the invention of freezers, people either dug up crops as they needed or had to lift and store them somewhere frost free.  Early crops tend not to store very well.

Thanks its starting to make sense, so you grow earlies to eat whilst your main crop are growing then use the main crop over winter.

Thats sensible now.

Thank you.

Some early varieties are able to germinate in lower temperatures also

And aside from the storage issue think about the difference in flavours and uses of later maturing veg

For example - What would life be like without a decent jacket potato once in a while?

 nonsense - I think most of us have been where you are now.  Get a year or 2 experience under your belt and before you know it, you'll soon get the gist of it.  And you never stop learning - you'll think you've cracked it then someone comes along with a better way of doing it  ;)

Earlies can be a useful 'gap filler' crop as well as they are generally quick to reach maturity. You can plant them any time so long as growing conditions are suitable. They tend not to grow very large, but some, if left, (like Charlotte potatoes) can grow huge if you leave them in.
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!
