Jeanette first early potatoes
« on: January 05, 2013, 15:28 »
Last year I grew an extra early variety of potato called Jeanette which I think I purchased from Fothergills. They grew well despite the appalling weather, they were ravaged by very little, they kept well in the ground and they tasted wonderful.  All in all a very successful crop.  This year, however, I seem unable to find them again.  Does anyone know where I might  buy them this year?

Welcome to the forums.

Sorry, never heard of them, neither have the usual databases I've looked in.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I've never heard of them either and searches are coming up blank, there is a variety called Juillette.
Optimism probably a gardeners best tool.

I did wonder as well, but far from being an extra early, Taterbase

http://www.dundrynurseries.co.uk/plist.asp

gives them as a main crop.

Juillette was one of the trial spuds I grew last year, not unlike a charlotte I thought great taste and came out of the ground in perfect condition top or my grow list for this year ;)

After seeing all your replies I thought I might have been imagining it, but a trawl through my emaill inbox turned up the Fothergill's promotion that featured them.  They are indeed called Jeanette and they were part of a 'French gourmet' collection.  They were 'new in 2012' and were described as having 'unusual orangey coloured skin'.

It seems I must have been the only one who liked them if they lasted only one season.  what a shame!

the google search I did brought up:

'Jeanette' F1 Hybrid - Organic - Thompson & Morgan
www.thompson-morgan.com/vegetables/...jeanette-f1.../552TM

but are not in this year's catalogue.

It may well be that after such a bad year, maybe the potato growers for the seed potato market have had to take them out of catalogues to build up stocks?

I've been growing this variety for the past 3 years - they are definitely a hardy potato tolerating dry and wet conditions well, and an amazing yield too.  More importantly especially on my plot, slug resistant too!  This year I am giving them a miss .... hope I don't regret it

I grew them last year as well and called Fothergills to try and source more this year unfortunately they said that it would be up to the manager if they are for sale again this, looking through their latest catalogue they don't have any. Shame as I agree, it's the best tasting potato I've grown, I'll be keeping an eye out in future. Highly recommended.

I was going to give Fothergills a call myself and might still do so in the vain hope that if they get enough enquiries about the Jeanatte potatoes that might consider stocking them again.
