Here's mine:

A week or so at this rate and I'll be pulling off some slips I think.

I've decided I'm going to try growing them in two slightly different ways

  • In a potato grow-bag in the greenhouse
  • In the ground under plastic

Good thing I started 3 sweet potatoes because one completely rotted on me. But, another one finally has little white rootlets, which means top sprouts will be along soon. And about time, too!  :D

Have I missed the boat for Sweet Potato slips?

I bought a sweet potato from T****'s and soaked it overnight to swill off any growth inhibitors it may have had and then suspended it in a glass of water. That was about three weeks ago but no roots or slips. I guess it is not going to go.

We've done the same.....still nothing yet....started thinking about buying some slips at this rate... :(

The top sprouts can take a while to form. A few got lucky and theirs sprouted very quickly. If you see nothing by April then you'll want to consider purchasing slips.

mine has finally started showing a couple of slips ( only about 5mm at the mo ) its been sat on the bedroom windowsill for about two months suspended in a jar of water.
it was more of an experiment because im not sure im going to be able to offer a suitable climate to grow them properly as i only have a cheapo plastic greenhouse.

Watch this video: HERE

I would make a grow box like these people did and grow it inside your little greenhouse all summer. It should shelter the plants from excessive rain and cold, and just might surprise you.

My remaining 2 tubers are finally getting the lead out. One has a few little white rootlets but no top growth, the other has no rootlets at all but I see leaf buds starting all over. Usually you get the rootlets first and then the sprouts, but nothing ever goes exactly as it should. As long as I get sprouts for planting, I'll be happy  :D

Heres a picture of my SPs! I started a little before this topic was started for the first one and put another in about 3 weeks after as a back up. The first one has done very well and the second has lots of little slips just forming so hopefully it will catch up too  :)

Do you only grow one slip in a grow box this size?  I have five plants so far and two or three more coming along!
