Strimmed my green manure, a bit soon maybe but I was dying to do it.
Planted out the garlic from the modules, they didn't look as if anything was growing, but when I turned them out all except one had lovely strong roots.
Gave the celeriac a trim.
Weeded the astroturf.
Picked 3 apples, but those two jonagolds are still not ready to come off!
Picked blackberries, probably the last. Picked the last two cucumbers.

Going to really spend some time on my plot this weekend. Fishing season finished yesterday so some of those autumn chores to be done, and the last of the carrots and runner beans to pick!
Cheers

Planted three rows of red onion sets.
Picked all yellow leaves off sprouts and cauliflower. Can see lots of lovely little sprouts. Not sure when winter cauliflowers appear as never grown them before!
Will pick rest of sweetcorn over weekend and dig and weed that bed.
Still elephant garlic and solent wight to plant.

Got lots done today.  Had a very difficult job taking down the sweetcorn, which had grown the tallest by far on the site ( the flavour was disappointing though!), I thought that they were supposed to have shallow roots!  Buried a pile of stuff in a bean trench and built two wigwams ready for next year. Cleared some courgette plants, although there are still more coming in the remaining plants. Mulched around the rhubarb and artichokes with borage. Weeded all the beds. Gave most of the herbs a trim. Braced myself and cut back the clary sage, beautiful flowers, but it smells awful.  It all looks much better.   :)

It's a record (for me) as I've visted the plot twice in one *week. (Should that be *month?)

  • Butternut squash harvested yesterday - wow have they done well considering all I did was plant them and water about four times.
  • Dug half a row of potatoes (deep dark red ones... wish I called remember what variety).
  • Hoed / weeded the leeks which have miraculously survived and grown from a fairly late planting
  • Smartened up the path edges to make it look as if someone cares.
  • Took photos so I can see what I manage to achieve in the next few weeks - hell's teeth it's a mess at the moment.
  • Spoke to a few allotment friends which made a change

Thought of my father and decided to follow his advice...... "a bit at a time and enjoy it"

Fri 18th Oct-Harvested Squashes, Pumpkins and put them in polytunnel to dry and ripen off. Then cleared the beds they was in and cut and composted all the plants. Weeded area, ready for compost /manure to be spread and then left to overwinter.

I finished clearing a bed of horsetail (well, the bits of the dreaded stuff thats in the top spitful) on my new 2nd plot and then planted garlic and autumn planting shallots and onion sets. Dug out and chucked away a whole row of Glen Ample autumn 'fruiting' raspberries that have got something wrong with them such that they never produce a single raspberry. Will be replacing with another variety (joan j) in Nov. Pulled out a lot of other rasps that were spreading where they should not, and started cutting out the fruited canes from my summer rasps.

The Plotfather and I dug over half the bed where pumpkins and squashes were. (About 5m X 6m)
Turned 2 compost bins....looking good.
Took down runner beans.
Sowed more spring onions and lettuce and picked some veg for dinner.
Nice cuppa half way through the morning.

2 trundles to the plot with the wheelbarrow full of spent compost from the greenhouse,1st trip Mr S accompanied me & took the now cut to size 2nd half of my bench/shelf & fitted it. We picked raspberries from our plot & H's as I got a text from her today to say pick them while she's away. 2nd trip I weeded some of the leeks, got home just before it hammered it down with the pumpkin I harvested last week & a bunch of chrysanthemums

Weeded the leeks. Harvested some more kale - and resolved not to cook it too long.  Y'day evening it was lovely bright green in the steamer one minute, and then a few mins later it had turned into a murky mess.  R says it's a winter veg and need lots of cooking.   I guess it's time to take the runners down, even though there are still some beans there.

My second year apple trees (a Bramley and a Jas Grieve)  have both produced a few little apples, which aren't yet coming away so I'm waiting. Each tree has a main stem and 3 or 4 side branches.  They look like the trees that very small children draw - stick trees.

Decided to take the advice received on this site and lifted half of the weed control fabric from one bed and dug over the revealed ground.  Lots of couch roots and some desperate dandelions still hanging in after 6 months in the dark.  Filled a big dog food sack with the weed remains.  Felt great - when I can finish the other half I'll then have 5 more beds to uncover and work on.  Hopefully next year my main crop won't be couch grass and weed fabric.
