Yesterday I finished filling the 13' x 8' raised bed and put some sweetcorn in it as well as a courgette plant. Also planted out 8 tomato plants. The plot is coming along nicely now.

Been up for an hour and a half 6.30 am and all was quiet, did a bucket and a half of weeding and nearly cried when i saw what mr badger had done to my beetroot bed  hoping it will recover but its a long shot.

Got a bit warm so came home and have just peeled and chopped all the beetroot ready for the chutney.

Life doest get much better than this.  :D

Will go back tonight when cooler and clear the weeds from dads potato patch  ::)

At the plot by 8 took nearly an hour to water everything as its so dry here. Sowed a row each of swede and turnip as first lot not doing too well. Netted the strawberries as coming along nicely   :)
All the way from my allotment in beautiful Derbyshire. I'm in year 3 of my allotment and wish I'd caught the bug years ago, things growing from strength to strength

Well that was fun!

The clay top layer on the plot was baked like stone. It is interesting to see how everyone is approaching this completely new site. Some have just gone ahead and planted without any preparation, some are busy building raised beds and putting up guttering on their sheds, one guy has already built a huge fruit cage.

For me, the approach has been to thoroughly prepare just a small area, so I have double dug and manured where I will plant runner beans tomorrow. Two spade depths down I hit greensand, and a fair bit of this is now mixed in with the clay.

Initial signs on the plot are encouraging - the soil makes quite a nice tilth with a bit of effort, and there are plently of earthworms present. But, the absence of any perimeter hedge to the west leaves it very windy.

Hubby cleared a small patch of dads boundary, flaming couch grass  ::)

I stayed home with the girls and chopped 4lb of onions ready for onion marmalade.
Going back once its cooler to de-weed some more of dads plot. Alright for some hes on holiday this week.
Also some more french beans and runners are ready to fill any bald patches.

My maincrop peas need to go out too but i dont have space yet unless i can get 8 lettuce for dinner.

Dug compost into the area where I planted out three courgette plants, and set out climbing French bean plants, including some Cherokee Trail of Tears for drying.

Weeded the emerging carrots and parsnips and gave the bed a good soak -- harvested the row marker radishes, which are suddenly very long indeed.

Cut a Little Gem lettuce and harvested the first golden podded mange tout for dinner tonight. The net is keeping the pigeons off the top of the frame now so the tops are re-shooting

Tackled the massively overgrown front verge, so at least we can park outside our plot again.

Sowed pots of basil and parsley seeds for the kitchen windowsill. Tied in some climbing French beans which were not climbing but waving in the breeze instead.  Watered!
