Bonsai Trees
« on: December 29, 2012, 20:01 »
I have been given three Bonsai trees over the last few weeks but one of them is not fairing too well.

Does anyone have any tips on keeping them healthy?

If they are recognisable as a tree - maple, Chinese or Japanese elms etc then they need to be outside. Many assume small means indoors but that isn't so.

Next is size, read a bonsai book and look at the images and read blurb and you will see that they are usually 2' to 2' 6" tall. They are not 4 or 6 inches.

I found that the dishes you see them in are often the show dish, I grow min in 10-12nch shallow terracota pots.

If the ones you have been given are the "standard" garden centre one they are better classed as Mame, these are the smallest varient and a nightmane to grow and keep alive.

I am guessing that they should be outside, the tree varieties would be helpful, and I would put them in a bigger pot, something like a 8 inch half pot should be good.

That would be best, and then I can help.

As SG6 said, some are best outside but many for sale in garden centres are not hardy, so donlt rush to put it out just yet.

Cool well lit position in the meanwhile Min. If dry and light feeling, stand it in water until the bubbles top rising, then drain it straight away. Spray the leaves if looking poorly with plain water.

Very helpful for me too, thanks. I was given one, in a small "show pot" exactly as you described.  I think its a Podocarpus - looks a bit like Yew.

Went to Wisley a few days ago and they had an exhibition of big'uns (bit of a contradiction in terms for Bonsai!!) - all outdoors in decent sized, but shallow, containers.  They looked much happier outside, so I'll put mine out, and get a larger "pan" for it.

I wonder if cold greenhouse would be better in Winter than outside?  Frost would probably spoil a nice container?

Podocarpus are a bit temperamental Kristen. They like cool bright conditions but would not really thrive outside in the winter. Summer time, they love it outdoors in the shade.

If you are going to repot your tree I would wait until early March. Specialist compost mixes ahev the right amount of nutrients for these small trees.

It probably will not yet need any root pruning, as it is quite a young tree I would guess
