Cutting back a hydrangea
« on: December 19, 2012, 09:47 »
I've inherited a huge hydrangea and would like to know how to cut it back.  I've searched online but just got confused as there seems to be two main types and I have no idea what this one is.

What would be best thing to do to ensure flowers next year? :)

First thing to do is leave it alone til spring  The old stems provide frost protection.

Then, cut out all obviously dead and weak stems at ground level and cut the remaining at just above the first pair of buds that fatten up in spring - easy  :)

Knew you would know mum.  If it's not edible I don't have a clue and it looks amazing, even though it is all brown now, so want to do it justice. :)

Be sure that there will be many more questions in the spring as the old boy that lived here was a keen gardener. :)

I'm sure it will be lovely, and you'll be fine - once you/we work out what plants you actually have there ;)
There's probably a load of stuff below ground that you don't even know about yet - how exciting  :D

Never mind, searching for it will pass those long dark evenings before the days start to lengthen again

Oh! That means you only have until Saturday  ::)
