Split beak
« on: November 28, 2007, 12:56 »
One of my Black Rocks (about 26 weeks old) has a beak where the top part curves over, and overhangs the bottom part slightly. This doesn't appear to affect her feeding or laying, so the advice I received was to let her be.

I've now noticed that the top beak has started to split down the middle (about 5mm long.) Again, this doesn't appear to have stopped her feeding but I'm worried that the split will continue and eventually completely divide the top beak.

Am I worrying about nothing? Any advice gratefully received!

Not something I've ever had to deal with Emsdad.

But I'm sure others here will be along to help  :D

Nail varnish or super glue the split  ( from the outside) and then trim off the split part that overlaps and no further, using ladies nail clippers.

If you have any doubts, get someone to hold the bird and get a photograph of the problem and then post it on here. it might just be something and nothing.

hello emsdad! I have an Orp with the same problem and I trim each side of the beak with nail sissors very carefully and that seems to work. Not used glue before! Although I can see all sorts of probems with that - ...however Bodger seems to be OK at finger typing

A bit gruesome I know but I knew a chap who had a favourite chicken which lost virtually all of its top beak. He took the top layer ( shell) off a presumably dead chicken and super glued it onto the debeaked birds bill.

He did this a number of times over a long period of time. The bird was able to eating perfectly well with its prostheic limb. A bit excessive I thought, but it was either that or into the pot with it.
