Milk Paint made with Yoghurt?
« on: December 15, 2012, 07:17 »
I'm thinking of making up a batch of milk paint. The local wholesalers sells skimmed milk yoghurt for 5.00 for a 10kg bucket. It will be much easier to use this (even if I do have to strain it to make it thicker) than go doen the curdled milk/cottage cheese route - and I get a bucket to mix it all in too! Does anyone know if this will work? I'm looking to make an exxterior grade paint to be applied directly to untreated/exposed softwood.

Thanks

I've not heard it done with yogurt, but that doesn't mean it can't be done. First I'd do a small pot of it, paint a scrap board and let it sit outside for a month or more to see how it lasts/ages or whatever before doing a big batch.

Here's an interesting addition for the paint: LINK

I've heard of this 'stuff' being used to age concrete or stone troughs but not on wood!

I seem to recollect that you just paint on milk to concrete to age it but Milk Paint is something different in so far that you also need to add lime / chalk and some oil as well to make a more waterproof surface however it does take several coats abs I dont think its very weather resistant > The milk acts as a glue sticking the lime to the wood
