I'm having one last go with sweetcorn.   Don't think I'll bother with celeriac again.  Sprouts take up too much room.  I haven't had a courgette to speak of this year and not much last, but I will persist with those in the hope of at least some summer sun.

GYO Girl, if you grow tall peas, you get a good yield per sq foot.... if they are something you like to eat of course  ;)

Thanks for the tip, could you suggest some good varieties?  I tried Kelvedon Wonder this year with dismal results.
No matter how many plants I have in my garden, I can always find room for one more.

I had great success in this dismal year with Champion of England, from Real Seeds.  It's also in this year's Heritage Seed Library catalogue.   It grew to about 7' 6" and produced loads of lovely peas.   Needed to tie it to the netting every foot or so (just wrapped garden twine round the netting) or they flopped a bit.  Will grow again next year.

It's been in the HSL a long time, something I can't understand as it's been commerically available for quite a while and in greater quantities than the 10 you get from the HSL!

I was given some a while back by a forum member and I grow it every year from saved seed.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I also had a lot of joy from my Champion of England peas. Didn't get too molested by slugs early on and they shot up, producing a lot of peas which I mostly ate on the plot. I have saved seed to try them again next year.

I've tried Alderman for the last two years, and in both years I've had a very poor crop. It's weird because both times they were right next to tall mangetout (Carouby) which did fantastically well. Next year I'm going to try a small variety and see if I do any better with those.

DD - which pea variety do you reckon gives the best crop, preferably a nice early variety so I can reuse the space for something else?

I reckon Kelvedon Wonder, (I'm sure there are others), would fit the bill. They're the ones that start this thread off

Oh dear, and it was Kelvedon Wonder that performed badly for me this year.  Doesn't bode well...

I'll put peas on their final warning then and give Champion of England a try next year.

DD - I've had a look at the link you posted - very impressive peas you have there!  They put my pathetic efforts to shame.

Sorry for digressing from the subject of the thread.

Echinacea would be my greatest failure so last warning for it!  I made so many mistakes this year that it would be silly to avoid another attempt at most vegetables next season.

Sprouts.  Useless crop this year and he only eats them at Christmas.

CARROTS! What is the point? They are cheap all year round and I cannot get them to grow properly. Have even removed any temptation by throwing out the remaining seeds!

Flavour - that's the point.

Most that you buy are a stick of coloured water!

Too true  :)

Its the same answer for the Hard to Buy Veg thread.  You can't buy stuff that tastes like homegrown if you pick your varieties wisely  :)
