Planting bare root fruit bushes in v. cold weather
« on: December 08, 2012, 15:38 »
Hi - I have some bare root gooseberry and currant plants waiting to plant out - they arrived this week. Currently in the garage packed in damp straw. Want to plant them out, but am concerned about the v. cold weather expected this week. Should I get them in asap or would it be better to wait? Thx.

As long as you can work the ground so you can press the soil close to the roots and exclude air pockets, you can plant them anytime.

In addition, its best to plant them as soon as possible, so as long as the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged, get them in. :)

And if it frozen and waterlogged, then healing them in somewhere less soggy is the answer.
As long as they are planted properly before they start to grow next year, it'll be OK.

(I'm not disagreeing  that they should be planted asap in an ideal world !)
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

Plant them in pot's or bucket's to be on the safe side.

Thanks. The ground is certainly very, very wet but perhaps not quite waterlogged. Maybe heeling them in somewhere would be better.
