Spring planted garlic
« on: December 02, 2012, 14:57 »
Hello allotmenteers. I have missed the boat for autumn planted garlic. Meant to put some in today but none of my local garden centres had any.
Any tips for planting in spring? I've only ever done it in autumn.
Planting times/ varieties and cropping months info would be appreciated.
Also, can I plant them on the spot my leeks are in at present? Thanks

I'm sure you could still get hold of some autumn planted garlic online, if you wanted to, as you can plant later than this. Mine isn't in the ground yet. :)

Thanks arugula, there seems to be a bit of a concensus that Autumn grown is more likely to be successful.

I have just got some from the garlic farm (via their webpage and on line order)and they recommend Nov for planting one variety and December for the other - recent pressures for me mean they will go in, at best, this week

A couple of years ago I didn't sow my Autumn Garlic until 5th December, I followed Johns method of sowing in pots and placing them in the G/House just to get the extra touch of warmth and get them going. I had a great crop the following year.

John has done a video of his method which will be on the site somewhere.

Thanks everyone this is great. I'll put in an order for some garlic at the Garlic Farm sharpish.

And if I don't get round to planting it straight away (just ordered Solent Wight) I'll follow the instructions on the video.
