My cockerel no crowing at mo... should I be concerned??
« on: November 26, 2012, 21:51 »
Hey all,
I havent heard my Cockerel Max crow since about 7am on Saturday morning. He is approx 18 months old. There are certain times of day when he crows. Sunrise/Dawn, often 2pm ish... when we return home and park car in yard next to house. As soon as we swing the heavy gate shut he crows.

He has no symptoms or signs of illness. Going about his daily pottering, feeding and drinking as usual, no flu like symptoms. Picked him up on Saturday and he is good weight for Winter coming, new feather growth. He really is a docile, friendly boy who loves a cuddle  :tongue2:

The weather has been dire the last couple of days ie heavy rain and winds etc. but he normally crows as normal.     Should I be worried???

As you have done all the usually checks (check his comb is still bright and normal shape and size - whether that is large and single or small and a pea comb) then I wouldn't worry too much - however if he becomes lethargic and his comb goes pale or his crop doesn't go down over night then you need to investigate further.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks Joyfull

Max has a large single comb and it is always very bright red. I have seen him eating but not seen him drinking. (thats not to say he's not drinking I know) Still no crowing. It's funny how you wouldn't expect to miss the calling but I do  :)

My neighbour about half a mile up road was thinking of having a cockerel cull as he had too many, so perhaps he has and maybe Max isn't crowing to the lack of competition? I'll ask my neighbour

Thanks again x

more than likely the reason - mine used to compete with the local boys (by local this can be any within a couple of miles radius as their crowing can carry a long way especially in the early hours).

I've picked him up again this morning and crop is empty. He's chattering to me and eating and drinking... no signs of illness so just have to keep an eye or ear perhaps on him

Thankyou  :)

Hi Joyfull

Just to let you know Max crowed 7 or 8 times this morning! I was so pleased to hear him lol.
I think its possibly just shorter daylight hours and the weather been so dire here. Keeping an eye on him, but he's his usual perky self

Thanks x
