Storing horse muck!
« on: November 25, 2012, 18:46 »
Hi folks a friend will be giving me some horse muck. I will not need to use it straight away and don't have anywhere that I can leave it piled up.

I have a couple of plastic bins empty, can you store horse muck in bins for use in the future?? Sorry if it seems a stupid question, new to all this!

Doesn't it need air to get to it, to carry on rotting?
Surely it would go slimey/eugh if it was in an airtight container

Make sure it has drainage holes.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I would try to save the liquid, diluted it makes a wonderful feed.

Just seen this thread and want to share my storage disaster as a word of caution. had some manure I was lovingly maturing in a composter, inside some thick plastic bags. However snails took shelter in the bags and of course started breeding. The stuff is shot through with snail eggs and quite unusable. So keep an eye out for snails wherever you are string them and remove/ smash etc as they appear before they take the place over.

Thanks mum of stig I'd actually put the lot on the site's rubbish tip. I'll retrieve it and open the bag to the elements and see what happens.

Have used horse muck for a while now leave it piled up in a corner with plastic over the top to keep out heavy rain. Have found that covering it with white plastic as opposed to black does not attract so many snails and slugs which both like the dark. Also  a few slug pellets aroun the pile helps.
