i went to garden center to buy garlic bulbs,onion sets,shallots but they didnt have garlic being impatient ibought some from the farmshop adjoining, will these be ok as they are not specific seed/bulb? is it possible to use potatoes i have from previous crop as i left some i had missed and they grew/yielded quite well

Garlic is worth a try but it really depends on what variety they are.  If they are from a Mediterranean country they will not be suited to our climate and may not do well.  It would be better to wait for Spring varieties of garlic.

Potatoes it is not advised to use tubers from the previous year's crop.  They can easily be infected with pests or diseases, and you will then run the risk of spreading such next year.  If you are growing them in pots at home, with no allotments nearby, then you might get away with it.  If you are growing near other veggie growers then they won't thank you for infecting the whole site...

the garlic are of isle wight type good point about potatoe  :(being a bit inconsiderate ,thinking about how it all went bad in ireland back in histoy. thank you for theprompt reply

The Garlic should be fine... plant it now and you should get a good crop.
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..
