Folding saw
« on: November 21, 2012, 14:24 »
I usually have one or two Al*i/L*dl/P*undshop folding saws around for odd jobs and cutting roots etc, but have decided to splash out on a good quality one for woodfuel scavenging. I've always liked sandvik/bahco bowsaws and handsaws so have gone for their Laplander - arriving tomorrow - but does anyone have any thoughts on makes/models and whether I've made the right choice?

ps and it wasn't cos Ray Mears uses one, honest... :)

I have a laplander and love it. Coppiced all my very thick branched hazel with it. Have sawn through fence posts etc. For a small folding saw it is really impressive.  :)

I really like the Silky range of saws but can't justify the expense of getting one!

They really are good though..... :)

I'd agree that Silky are probably the best choice.  The professionals (tree surgeons) here all seem to use them.

Me and the memsahib were getting organised for a canal holiday on a boat with a stove.  I bought a cheapy Spear and Jackson folding saw.  The weather was too warm to use the stove but I tried the saw - it broke.

BUT. . . the break wasn't where you would think it would break so I sent it back to S & J Resaerch and Developement department with a letter saying the same.

Back came a very pleasant letter and a top of the range folding saw.

Cheers,   Tony.

Another vote for Silky,I get to use the ones that my son has decided don't cut fast enough after dulling the edge on wood or bone, yes he has cut down to his on several occasions, and they still cut faster than any other saw iv'e used.

I think so too ....

It's joint top of my list too .... but it's restling with a small yurt !

I first saw this in the flesh (as opposed to RM programme) the winter before last while up north over the festival holiday when it was -20. A family were camping in the slightly bigger version of this (they were the only tent out then!).... It was decked out with the stove and chimney.  Warm as toast apparently ....

Sorry savbo for going off topic - back to folding saws....  I spent a summer camping in 'Lapland' a few years ago, and all the 'locals' carried folding saws for kindling/firewood - if RM says it's good, I'm sure you'll not be disappointed    :D
