Plant a tree for a new baby
« on: November 11, 2012, 09:28 »
Hi all,
We shall be having our first child in the next day or so and recently thought about planting a tree to celebrate this.

I live on the Isle of Wight and the mrs was thinking a fruit tree.

I would like a tree that will go fairly big, but not massive. We have a cherry tree in our garden and that is a nice size.

What are your suggestions?
Many thanks,
Stuart

perhaps an apple as I am sure baby will become the 'apple of your eye',just research the rootstock for the eventual size of the tree, or go for small & then you can have an orchard if you have more babies

Great idea, snowdrops. Most folk have to fight the birds for cherries, but not apples, which are often the recipes mainstay.

Why not plant something that you like to eat. Apples, pears and plums will all make a good sized tree on the right rootstock with the bonus of lovely blossom in spring.

Crab apples are lovely trees: you usually get a good crop and you could make jelly from them in the Autumn  :)

Hi Stu,

Have you considered a type of nut tree?  I believe sweet chestnut, walnut or almond could grow quite well and give a good crop depending on the weather.  They can take a few years to produce nuts so by the time your son/daughter is running around you could have some nuts to share with her.
Add me on PSN but nowadays I reach for the fork or hoe more than a controller

The first two trees can grow up to 35m in height so not advisable unless in a large park situation.

The almond is smaller, reaching up to about 10m in height.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
