stoat?
« on: November 08, 2012, 17:19 »
Hi everyone

Haven't been on for a long time, but regularly check in  :D

Is this a stoat, one of my cats brought it back, so no tail end left for me to look at.

Jo

you can see my size 7 boot in this picture, just to get an idea of its size

mmm, about 6/7 inches long, hard to say about weight, its back end seems to have met the cat  :)  so no back leg or tail, I am not great at guessing weights either, I picked it up on a trowel, and hardly felt anything, ounces I am guessing?

It could really be stoat or weasel from the colouring and from the size which is also similar. If you had the tail a dark tip would tell you its a stoat, rather than  a weasel.

Looking at the face being as pointed as it is, I'm leaning towards stoat, as I believe a weasel's head tends to be wider.

the stoat can be up to 2 inches longer but weight wise an adult weasel will range between 50 - 120 grams whereas a stoat can weigh 100 - 450 grams so the weight would have been a better way of identifying which it might have been.

Thanks for the replies, :D

I do hope that I don't see anymore of them to be honest, I like my hens and ducks too much!

Weasel at the top.
