Tip about fruit tree buying
« on: November 02, 2012, 19:08 »
Someone mentioned http://www.mailordertrees.co.uk on here a while ago. I've just bought three fruit trees from them and am delighted to recommend them for a special offer they have at the moment. They have some "imperfect" fruit trees on special offer at £47.42 for three  including delivery. Mine arrived within two days of ordering, are extremely healthy-looking two-year old specimens at about 2 metres height and as they are rooted into pots can be planted right away.

Apparently the "imperfection" is to do with their slightly irregular shape although to me and my neighbour who's been growing fruit for fifty years, they look fine

Yes, it might have been me as I have bought from them before and been  pleased. I saw the offer, I think they also have ornamental trees (also imperfect) on an offer too. Unfortunately I have too many trees already for the space that I have. I think that although a little more expensive than some suppliers they are very nice trees. :)

You need to be very careful about buying trees from supermarkets or other non-specialists.

They tend not to have the rootstock identified on them, so you risk having the most vigorous version of the tree ... which is not always appropriate in many gardens.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Just an update. Two of the trees, a Cox's and a Bramley Seedling cooker produced a bumper harvest, just 10 months after planting.

I'm looking for some mini (dwarf) fruit tress. They don't appear to sell these though.
Max height I want them to grow is around 7ft. I found one place I can get them. Anyone know a good supplier?

Do you mean patio trees? They get to about 1.5m high in containers, a bit higher in the ground.

Blackmoors have a few: http://www.blackmoor.co.uk/category/347 and have a good reputation. They get a proportion of their trees in turn from Brogdale, which is here: http://www.brogdaleonline.co.uk/buy/ Both very good suppliers. Most of the trees in both my local garden centres are either from Brogdale or from Blackmoors.

Thanks surbie,
Not patio, but I'm looking for dwarf trees to plant in a small space in the garden that I want to create as a decorative feature....and also have the benefit of nice fruit. ;)
these give me some other options. I was looking at this supplier http://www.yougarden.com/Fruit/Fruit-Trees/Apple-Trees/Orchard-Fruit-Collection-With-3-Multi-Branched-Bare-Root-Trees_30-0004.htm?source=GGOOGLE&gclid=CL_0-9X97bYCFXHLtAodsn8AFg
I just bought some strawberry plants from them and they arrived all in good shape and looking healthy.
