Still have tadpoles
« on: October 27, 2012, 17:55 »
I noticed when clearing the pond of leaves that I dredged up a few live tadpoles. Is this normal for the time of year ? I thought they would have changed by now. Hope the cold weather doesn't kill them.

I always have a lot of taddies that overwinter before changing to froglets so quite normal.
I think it is Mother Nature covering all the options , a hard winter may do more harm to small frogs on the ground than taddies deep in the water.

I think I have read that it sometimes happens if they have not fed enough to change for them to overwinter.  It will depend how bad a winter we have and if you pond is deep enough for them to survive.

Some of the overwintering taddies are huge at least three times the size of normal.
I think some just suffer from late froggy puberty ! :)
