Pumpkin seeds
« on: October 23, 2012, 15:34 »
Aft'noon. Chopped one of my pumpkins up today to make some lovely soup. Inside must have been 1000 seeds. I scooped them all out and have laid them out on kitchen paper in the hope that they will dry out and be usable come spring. Do I need to do anything else with them?

Yes.

Keep your fingers crossed that they were not an F1 variety and also that they have not cross-pollinated with any other nearby cucurbits, such as courgettes.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

DD, you have a picture somewhere showing the consequences of cross-pollination, don't you?

Auntie, I agree I always put pumpkin seeds in my homemade muesli.

Unless you plan to grow 1000 plants, you could try roasting them on a tray in the oven... lovely sprinkled with sea salt  8)

I saved seeds from last year an got a wonderful mix of courgettes, marrows and pumpkins.   :D

Also, found a recipe for roasted pumpkin seed brittle - WOW that was nice, wish I'd have saved the recipe, but I'll be finding something like it through google.

I don't know!

They were plants I gave away to a neighbouring plot holder. They were "sold" to him as trailing marrows.

He said they tasted OK, but I never did find out how he cooked them. He had to give up the plot due to ill health, hopefully nothing to do with eating them.
