« on: October 10, 2012, 17:41 »
Greetings all

My sussex light hen has suddenly started laying white torpedo shaped eggs they are quite long about 3.5 inches

Any ideas as to why her eggs have changed from brown to white and also the shape ???

She is two years old by the way in case thats relevant

Thank you in advance :) :) :)

It could be down to a hen molting or a change in diet.  Are the shells as strong as normal or more fragile?

Thank you for your reply

No change in diet and the shells seem as hard as normal apart from the shape and colour change, a few have had rings in them near the top

many thanks

The eggs change shape as the hen ages, which is why battery hens are ditched after a short period of time as once their eggs start to get misshapen they won't sell them in the supermarket

Your eggs will be fine but just look a little odd  :)

I don't know if it is a Light Sussex thing but I had one who laid torpedo shaped eggs. They still taste great though. :)

I have a Light Sussex (3 years old) who now lays accordian shaped eggs - flat either end and really wrinkly in the middle. She's done it this laying season only, so it might be an age related thing as otherwise she is in good health.

I don't tend to sell the odd shaped eggs, so my egg tree looks wierd and wonderful with all of the different shapes that are sometimes in it!

We definitely need to see a photo of your musical eggs.   ;)

I feel a photo competition of the weirdest shape egg thing coming on  :D :D

Her eggs are a bit wrinkly too, and yes agreed still taste yummy and i even give the occasional ones to the hegehogs who love them and dont care if they are torpedo shaped or not !

She is in excellent health and will be approaching three in feb next year

Anyone know life expectency for this hybrid breed ???

It is confusing but Light Sussex come in a pure breed form and as a hybrid - not sure of the history behind this. As it sounds as though you have the hybrid type the shape of her eggs may well be to do with age. Hybrids lay very well for a couple of years and then ease off and she may well be coming to the end of her egg laying years. :)

One of my girls lays a Torpedo shapped egg about once a week her others seem OK though.  She has not moulted yet since we have had her, so maybe it's a sign of things to come.
