Waterlogged soil
« on: October 12, 2012, 11:40 »
Hi

One part of my new allotment becomes quite waterlogged very quickly, even after moderate rain (and we've all had enough of that lately!).

Can anyone suggest any veg plants that will not necessarily thrive under wet conditions, but at least tolerate them well?

Many thanks

My (London clay) beds have been incredibly soggy - though it's my first year so I am not sure if it's just this year or a permanent condition. The 2 worst have had comfrey, mint, broccoli, fennel, marketmore and crystal lemon cucumbers, radishes, french beans and squash all thrive in them. But half my potatoes rotted, the kohlrabi was very unhappy and the tomatoes gave up.

I will be building up the beds' height this year with as much manure & compost & grit as I can get my hands on, and making shallow drainage ditches to go along the plot's slant, just to take out some of the worst of it.

Good luck!

Thanks Surbie!

I had wondered about the likes of fennel and squashes, but didn't want to risk it! I'll try those, plus some beans in the worst affected places next year.

Thanks again!

My Swede and Celeriac have thrived in the soggy part of my plot and the Savoy cabbages are looking pretty good.

I had standing water on part of my plot for quite a few weeks in spring and the things that survived were comfrey, and brassicas and one gooseberry bush managed to hang on.
Oh, and lots of weeds, dandelion, buttercups etc, but even they looked a bit the worse for it. ;)  I think nothing really likes it roots starved of air unless it is a water plant.
