help me identify these trees
« on: October 15, 2012, 14:15 »
Hello treasure trove of gardening knowledge  ;)

There are two small trees in our garden and I have no idea what they are. I've taken some photos and hopefully someone will be able to tell me what they are.

The first one has smooth dark bark just like a cherry tree, but the leaves don't look like cherry at all.

The second one is in a much more sunny spot, so it could even be the same tree, but the bark on the stem looks very different - a greenish grey and quite rough, whereas the bark on the young twigs is smooth and dark just like on the other tree. The leaves look similar.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Juli

I've just had another look around. Could they be sloe trees?

If those are thorns in your 3rd pic  then they could well be sloes. You'll have to wait until next year for fruit, if they are a bit bigger than it's a bullace  ;)

I've had another look, and the first tree does have some tiny thorns, but the second tree doesn't.

So, I'm quite confident now that the first tree is a Sloe, but still have no idea what the second one could be. Would anyone else like to hazard a guess?

Thanks for the guess, but I'm quite sure it's not poplar.
