Onion storage
« on: September 17, 2012, 13:00 »
Hi,

Well I left the onions to dry out, two weeks in the greenhouse before finding out I'm supposed to keep them out of sunlight because they'll go bitter otherwise. Still, only using them in recipes (curry, chilli etc.) so don't think it will make much difference.

I believe I have to store at approx 5-10 degrees C, like potatoes. I've hung them up in my allotment shed away from the sunlight but on hot days it seems to get fairly hot in there (although the potatoes in the boxes are cooler due to the box). I don't have any space at home or a garage to hang them up, so this appears to be my best option. Will it cause problems do you think?

I always dry mine in the greenhouse. I think the worry is that if they get too much hot sunlight they could get cooked, but I don't think there's much chance of that happening at the moment. Once they're fully dried, then they need to be stored somewhere cooler.
