pig muck
« on: September 14, 2012, 17:53 »
I was given 6 bags (each bag about the size of a 60litre compost bag, half full) of what they called pig muck. Surprisingly, it is not very smelly as the bags have been sitting in the garden for about 2 to 3 months.  On looking at it closely, (you have to be a devoted gardener to do this) it consists of formed poo mixed with wood shavings. I have tipped it all into an old compost bin and there isn't an awful lot, only about 6 inches depth, while I thought about what is the best way to use it.

Is it gold or is it dross?  Any ideas?

Any muck is gold.... and you can make good compost with it.. Keep adding your normal compost materials and use it next season.. The fact it no longer smells is a good indication that it is ageing..

Pig muck is far too strong to be used fresh but once composted it's as good as any other animal manure. I worked on pig farms when I was a youngster and I remember that the animals were pumped full of antibiotics and other stuff in those days but I suspect things are a lot more stringent nowadays.

Sounds like it would be best to lob it on the compost heap. When I am turning it will probably be the best time.  Thanks for the input.
