Suggestions for sowing now.
« on: September 09, 2012, 13:14 »
Hi all

Does anyone have any suggestions for sowing something now? I'm at the end of my first year here, and now that the weeds are under control I have a lot of empty beds doing nothing.

Thanks!

Michael

Not a lot at this time of year, but white lisbon onions and winter lettuce according to John's mon by month

http://www.allotment-garden.org/month-by-month

Yesterday I sowed 12 all year round cauli and 12 durham early cabbage seeds, although John's m by m says to plant them out now rather than sow, but I will have a go.

They are also talking about the overwintering crops like broad beans for an early crop next year, but as our ground gets VERY wet in the winter.  I don't bother with over wintering stuff.

I've got some carrots and white lisbon just starting off in big plastic boxes, which if the weather get too rough, will go into the greenhouse.

"All Year Round" cauli is a misnomer. They're not really suitable for over-wintering.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'm alright with that, can't stand the stuff :-P I could try the spring onions, I have a packet of that variety in the cupboard.

i have some onion sets left over from begining of the year so i will give them a try then and i will have a go with with colli and cabage if they fail i will just try and be better prepared for next year which will be my 2nd year,i also learnt that when you get told by the experienced member,s on here like dd for example that they are generally correct with the advice they give,i know to my cost cos i ignored some of it and lived to regret !!

If you want to plant onion sets at this time of year you will need to get a variety that overwinters
for autumn planting.  Sets intended for planting in the spring will not be successful.   Personally I have not done well with autumn planted sets, but I know others do well.  Shallots you can order now, but most planted  in very late winter or early spring.  Garlic is definitely one to plant in autumn, I have had better results than spring planting.

I planted my garlic last autumn, the shoots were just poking through when we got the snow, and they grew reasonably in the end until they got hit by rust. I seem to recall planting those in october though.

You could try mizuna/mibuna or mustards. They are nice tangy additions to salads and look pretty!

Beware of slugs with mibuna/mizuna...

In my experience Red Giant Mustard stands well through the winter.
