Disaster
« on: February 02, 2013, 17:43 »
Just gone up to my plot and my pride and joy poly tunnel has collapsed, I'm assuming because of the weight of snow that landed on it. It's a galvanised frame and the 2 ends are fine and intact...all the inner frame isn't though. There are bits and pieces sticking out which have snapped.

Any ideas anyone? At first I was thinking new frame but if anyone has any advice?

Took pics but don't  seem to be able to upload them on here...

Bend it back into shape and put some gaffer tape onto it ??  Hope the damage can be repaired.

Can't offer any advice, but do you have any details of the construction? (tube size, wall thickness etc) - I'm looking to avoid any similar problems.

Hi Scatty, going to give it a whirl and I'll let you know how I go!

Doddy, it was a galvanised frame which you out together off a main spine. The tubes were about half inch diameter. To be honest it's withstood gales and storms, we got hammered by snow last Friday nights and i reckon it was just the weight of that..couldn't get to it to clear it

bobsbooth: Thanks for the info - 1/2 sounds a bit on the light-weight side of things. Just a thought, though, if you have any 25mm MDPE (a common find on allotments :) then the inner diameter is around 15mm I think - you could sheath the "straightened" bits of frame with long runs of this to add a bit of rigidity back to the frame.

If the ends are fine you could replace the middle loop with water pipe and the top support with wooden batten.  Just a thought.  ::)
