My problem was as soon as the overwinter ones were up the spring planted started dying back, hardly seemed worth the effort.  Might just plant more in spring next year.
Toiling through 100sq metres of clay - And I don't actually eat much veg!

If getting sets then one odd thing - plant the smaller ones not the nice big ones.  ??? ???

The larger ones may have registered the growth they have done as being 1st year and so the main growth is then 2nd year and they go to seed.

just planted a row of onion seed direct into the plot, I got them in france and they look to be the large white ones, so fingers crossed, I have enough seed left for a second row on my other half plot, so they will be planted next week.

I had a similar issue to you Shoozie this year.  I thought I would do overwintering sets, then seed sown spring varieties.  What a disaster.   A handful of overwintering Snowball and Electric survived and were quite small and all my seed sown onions failed.   I attempted a rescue and planted some Sturon sets reduced from Wilkinsons in mid May, and I look to have a reasonable crop of smallish onions, better than nothing.  Only bright point is that the Longor shallots were superb.

Next year I am going back to spring planted sets and to Turbo which gave me a fantastic crop, plus the shallots.

Surely that's far too early? I thought they are planted on the shortest day..

They can be planted between September and March

I will be getting more varieties for planting out later but you have to make a start  :)

I had a patch of ground cleared so took the opportunity to refill it

Wilko have them in stock now.  They will be available to order via the local allotment association too
I was just cursing that there isn't one too near to me and I've just checked the website and there's one in Bletchley (which isn't far from my work!) - where did that come from I swear it wasn't there before!  I will be "a-visiting"...

Hannah :)

I just made it to Wilkos and back in my lunchbreak!  I got a bag of 3 garlic and a bag of mixed onions!  I think this is enough for the space I have to grow them in...

(I also got a watering can for <£1.50 - it's only a basic plastic one but it'll be useful for the price!)  They had a good selection of flowering bulbs, all in quite basic packaging but all seemed quite reasonable priced!

Hannah :)

Popped to my local Wilkos on my lunch break but there is nothing - no seeds, no sets, no garlic, nowt!

The gardening section seems to be having a re-organisation or is being shrunk to make way for something else.

I want to get my onions and garlic, I'm keen, though I know this is maybe a little too soon (not even sure where I'll be putting them yet!)

They are with the flowering bulbs!!!!  I bet they are on the bottom shelf!  I kept visiting the store and the boxes to receive them were empty each time so I asked when they'd be in but they didn't know. I kept popping in to two stores which are nearby and eventually got some. They sell out fast!  The onions are not labelled  :nowink: but I think they could be Radar.

I will have another look - I did wonder if they'd muddled them up with the flowers but couldn't see them.

Maybe if I scramble about on the floor I may have some joy!
