Poor onions
« on: August 22, 2012, 14:44 »
My onion crop is, quite frankly, pants! I planted 100 (50 white 50 red) in march and as I write, only about 20% of them have reached 'onion size'. Some of them haven't grown at all. The foliage is starting to bend over now so I presume that's it for this year. Did I do something wrong? Had a fantastic crop from my winter onions

20% is better then the 0% of mine that are little bigger then when they went in as sets.
So far nothing that was grown has come to anything that could be described as remotely usable or edible.

Some friends a couple of plots away, were spied rushing around a spare bit of ground, just chucking red onion sets in here and there in late April. She said they'd probably bolt, it was far too late, and she reckoned they'd die off immediately...

They're the best onions on the whole lot of plots, huge, and still growing...

Paaaaah!

(Our's were pretty sulky and small too Rich, only just about covered the cost too!
