drying spuds without shed
« on: August 14, 2012, 13:36 »
Any tips for drying off spuds without any outdoor covered space, and very little indoor space?!  In a rainy Scotland.

Ive got them stacked up in a cardboard box with straw at the bottom in the house, but Im worried its too warm and the ones nearer the bottom wont dry properly.

Thanks

It's a longshot, but could you spread them out in single layers on newspaper underneath some beds until they're dry? Normally straw would work but if your weather is that damp right now, then you need to try something else until they do dry properly. It should also be dark enough to keep them. If your beds have bedskirts, that would do the trick. If not, prop up a few sheets of newspaper along the edges to block the light.

Mine are on a sheet of poly spread out on the dining room floor, they dry out overnight- but I've been out since early this morning so haven't got them packed away yet  ::)
They can be paper bagged or boxed and stored - in the dark in the coolest place you can find, as long as it's frost-free.

Under the bed in a spare room would be good - as long as it's kept cool.

I dry mine on an old cotton sheet laid out on the dining room floor.

They dry in a day and then they go into hessian or paper sacks, and out to the garage for storing.

My friend who has no outside storage, keeps his in their attic
