Mo (silkieX) is a determined broody. She manages to make the wire base look cosy in the cage. I let her out once Minnis has laid and then shut the pop hole. She grumbles around for the rest of the day then is first into bed and we start over again in the morning. Always a new thing to focus on with these chickens!

Update on my girls.
Well.  They've stopped being broody. Hooray, and are happily ambling about the garden again. So all is back to normal - EXCEPT we haven't had one egg from any of them for weeks now
Apart from them looking pretty wandering around we are starting to wonder just what is the point?? None of them like to be touched, and goodness I have tried to get them tamed but they just will not tolerate being stroked let alone picked up and as for actually jumping up onto your knee or even just sitting there, if I do managed to get hold of one. Forget it. No way!! They will come when called but only because they know I have their treats for them. I just know that in a few weeks time its going to start all over again with the broodiness. And why do they all have to go broody at the same time. It wouldn't be so bad if one at a time did it then at least we would get some eggs??
Sorry. Rant now over

I chose my two wyandottes bantams as I wanted broodies.  They are really good at it and make great Mums.   ;)

I have been smiling while reading this series of posts - just this morning my OH was complaining about two of our banty hens being broody - yet again. He was threatening to dunk then in the ducks pool to cool them off.  Cannot remember when we last got an egg from them. Luckily the rest of the hens are laying well.

Had to smile at you post as well Springlands  :D
I can just imagine them getting dunked!!! I wish I had a pond!
After about 6 weeks we are all laying again. Wohoo!! How long for remains to be seen but at least things are back to normal now. for the time being
Just can't believe all 3 of them broody all at once.
Not one of them laying. Tut tut.
Hind sight is a wonderful thing. Had I known what bantys were like I would have probably gone for some other breed possibly hybrids that aren't as broody, but we have these 3 now so heyho. Press on  :D

I don't know if it is all bantam breeds that are renowned for beeing broody just know that wyandotte seem to think that is their main job!  ::)

Our 2 Pekins are probably more broody than the Wyandotte but on the whole they're all as bad as each other. So it probably is most Bantys  I know Silkies are very broody.

It has been so lovely reading these posts, they are little monkeys giving us humans the run around broodiness is most DEFINATELY contagious my little bantam gladys was constantely broody then the large sussex copied her then my barnavelder the only one that wasnt was my hybrid but it meant she was on her own all day looking utterly miserable as all her wee pals were broody, she has stopped laying which was a good job as all 3 nest boxes were full  for 3 weeks!!!!!

Wow I can sympathise my amber star whos speck was 'suited to free range conditions' is now into week 4 of being a complete hormonaly mess as I like to put it, my other hen likes being on her own I think as she seems to have a large crop each day as she doesn't have to share any treats which she finds, including a small toad today whilst she was helping to do the garden  :nowink:

Oh Pixieswift I love the name Gladys for one of your girls  :D
I wisah I'd thought of that name for one of mine. As my mothers middle name was Gladys. I just never gave it a thought.

I'll just update on my 3 that they are all back to normal  now and we are now getting 3 eggs a day. HOORAY!!!!
Just how long for remains to be seen.

I didn't know hens liked toads Sneezer. Just shows. I wonder do they eat slugs and snails as on a night my back garden is littered with them

Oh yes snails are a treat as for slugs mine don't eat them, my little darling Rosa had a large toad yesterday which she spent about an hour throwing about until it would go down, and then her crop was huge!!!

Anndee Gladys was my Grandmothers name that is who she was named after and it really suited her. As for toads if my girls find one they run around the garden with there necks stretched out and this almighty toad hanging from there mouths snatching it off each other its HILLARIOUS to watch  i dont let them eat them though i just let them play for a while and then take it off them. As for slugs mine have a peck at them and leave them and the same for snails my girl had a bird once with a broken wing  :nowink:
