Noisy chickens
« on: July 23, 2012, 17:19 »
Hi
one of our chickens has started to make loads of noise in the morning. She never used to, they'd all make a bit of noise but now Jess has taken to being really loud and going on and on, its almost like having a cockerel. I am worried that the neighbours will complain. Does anyone else have noisy chickens? Is there anything you can do about it?
thanks

Is it when she's laid an egg.  They do like to celebrate their achievements.  ;)

I'm sure if you give some eggs every so often to your neighbours they won't mind too much, and in fact a lot of people really like the noise the hens make so just ask them and don't worry.

Our speckledy girl, who is boss lady, is much noisier than the other two. She certainly makes a fuss when she has laid an egg, but also when she wants out in the morning, when she hears my car stop on the other side of the gates, or even just because!

We have asked the neighbours and they are quite happy, I think most people generally like the sound of hens going about their business destroying your property! :D We give them eggs when we can, but with only two laying that's not often. (I'm a bit possessive )

Yes mine do the egg song but to make it worse our husky joins in by howling its awful lol ::) non of my neighbours can say much considering the have a dog thats left out day and night that barks non stop and the seagulls make enough noise. Do like what kegs says and offer some eggs  ;) I will have to try and video my chooks and husky having a duet and figure out how to upload it.

Sometimes they make more noise when they are wanting to be in the nestbox and it is already engaged!  I think that the warmer weather has had an effect on mine and they are more vocal.   ::)

You will have to try hard at that one as I think we really do need to see that  ;)

Mine all made a helluva racket the other day, when I rushed out to see what the problem was it turned out to be a giant teddy bear stuck in a tree looking at them! the kids next door had obviously thrown it and the girls got into a panic. Once it was retrieved they all settled down again.

I have one girl who just complains constantly... it's not even a nice chook voice- it can be really nerve-grating!  When ever she sees you she will start complaining!!

Luckily the rest of my gang are fairly quiet  :tongue2:  but there is always one

but there is always one
We have one that talks to herself constantly. I can hear her in the coop before they're let out. When she's eating she still manages to do it. She even manages to do a little noise in her sleep at night. The only time she's quiet is when she's broody.

One of my chickens makes an appalling constant noise about half an hour before she lays an egg and half an hour after. It's times like this I'm glad I moved them up the field to the stables ;)
I'm sure it's nothing to worry about just keep an eye on her.

I am the queen of noisey chickens LOL
Mine are the same as yours byt the sounds of it, they cluck and fuss something chronic in the mornings even though they are let out at dawn (we have an automatic door) sometimes they scream as they want to come out into the garden even though their run is big.

I am looking forwrd to the darker mornings so i can get some sleep lol. I was out at 5.30 this morning trying to shusshh them with bribes of milworms and anything else i could find. by 7am they quieten down but i did notice my neighbours had all their windows closed this morning despite it being hot  ???. I am really worried about the neighbours complaining (we have 1 direct neighbour and 2 sort of opposite us) but no one has and we have had the girls 3 years now.

we leave a lettuce or something like that hanging in their coop in the morning so they have something to play with and distract them from being noisey.......seems they like to be noisey on weekends and any day i dont have to be at work early!
Gained an allotment on the 19th June 08, 135ft by 40ft! eekk. Finally after 4 years it is looking like an allotment and not a jungle

We have 5 lovely hens in the garden, fish, 2 dogs and 2 canaries
