How to prepare Lavender for winter
« on: July 28, 2012, 22:34 »
I sowed about 70 Lavender in Feb, they are doing well and are still in pots in the garden, they are slow growing, but are healthy, what can I do with them to prepare them for winter, I dont have a greenhouse, I love them but cannot bring 70 indoors for winter, I was thinking of preparing long planter pots and using a mix of fine gravel and soil, Would they need protection in winter?? Anybody know what to do with them x

My mature lavender plants don't get any special treatment overwinter. If they are still small and you are concerned, you could fleece them.

Mine were about 3 inches high last autumn & came through the winter ok outside.  It would help to raise them off the ground a bit so they don't get waterlogged - I grouped my pots in big seed trays on bricks.  Also, as argyllie suggests, keep some fleece handy.

I had a couple of Hidcote English lavender cuttings overwinter last year without any protection despite having barely had time to root.

You haven't said whether yours are English or French types - I've found the former bombproof and the latter only a bit less hardy, although both will struggle if they get waterlogged.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

English Munstead variety, a bit more robust than French I think hopefully  :)

Yes, Munstead is very tough.  I don't bother with French lavender here as it never survives the winter.
