"Secondary pruning"
« on: April 09, 2013, 13:20 »

I pruned our apple and pear trees mid winter and now the buds are breaking out I find that some buds are quite a distance back from where I made a cut. (I was convinced the lump was a bud at the time).  Should I cut back the branch to the recommended distance from the bud now I can see them?

Cheers and thanks in advance.   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I find this happens whenever I prune my roses. We have had a lot of bitter easterly winds here and these can damage the first buds. Leave it until the leaves shoot happily, then prune off the bad bits.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Thanks for that advice, the bits aren't bad, just extending (2" - 3") way past the buds.

Cheers,    Tony.
