Tomato San Marzano
« on: July 15, 2012, 22:31 »
I have 6 of these growing in 10" bottomless pots is my greenhouse border.

They have reached the eaves now and I have pinched the main stem out.
I have allowed side shoots to develop as this is a bush variety and have started pinching these out as they are getting quite big and needing support now.

I have some fruit develping now but do I need to limit the number of trusses as I seem to have quite a few compared to my Sungold or Shirley's?

Cheers in advance for any advice.

Be careful about letting these toms grow too many side shoots because they can turn into complete thugs if you're not careful. They often seem to throw up secondary main stems from the base. I've seen them listed as semi-determinate and I grow them as a cordon, and I do remove all the side shoots. I didn't stop mine last year nor limit the trusses, and had a huge crop from them, with all of the fruit ripening well. But toward the end of the year I was struggling to support them because one or two of those secondary main stems got away from me and they ended up much too big for their pots.

I grow mine as cordons as well and they are very sturdy plants. I wouldn't let them carry more than 6 trusses.
Support any side shoots with their own cane or strings.

I'm pinching off all the side shoots (well those I can see anyway) on my San Marzanos.  Is this the correct thing to do?   They are not very tall plants but have grown very strong in the polytunnel.  Trusses starting to appear now.   Praying for sunshine...  :-)   Some of my other tomato plants (various) have turned into monsters while I wasn't looking
