What's good in a pot with lilies
« on: September 12, 2012, 14:49 »
I want to plant up some pots of lilies because I adore them, but was thinking it would be nice to have something else planted around them in the pot for a bit of interest when the lilies aren't flowering. I believe lilies quite like having a bit of shade around their roots. Obviously it can't be something too vigorous or greedy. I'm going to do one very big pot with some tree lilies in (always wanted to try them) and some smaller pots with oriental or trumpet lilies, because I adore the scent.

Any ideas? Or is it a bad idea to put something else in the pot?

If the pot is large enough, then the lilies will be fine. They need to be buried at least 6" deep in the pot with lots of rotted manure to feed them. You can always top plant with bacopa, petunias, portulacas, whatever low grower takes your fancy.

I plant winter flowering pansies in the  Autumn  and put similar coloured petunias in for the summer interest. Sometimes put a handful of white or pink mallow seeds as well, with the white and pink lillies.

Or white lobelia to trail over the side of the pots.

I have forget-me-not in our lily pots, which gives some early interest without upsetting the lilies, and these are usually replaced with white bacopa and petunias.

The whole lot needs plenty of water and a good feed every couple of weeks to keep everything going
