planting leeks on onion patch
« on: July 05, 2012, 08:16 »
I have just lifted my onions and garlic and am wondering if i can put in my leek plantlets there. It's really the only available space at the moment as the potatoes won't come up for another month (if the dreaded blight doesn't strike). Has anyone ever planted leeks in soil recently vacated by onions and garlic and is it OK to do so? I'm thinking of potential problems such as rust and other diseases. Thanks

I do this. All you are doing is extending the time onion relatives are in that patch. As long as the gap in the rotation is wide it should do no harm. If you have any white rot I would not do it.

Rusts are very specific to species so garlic rust does not grow on leeks and vici versa.

Thanks Salmo. I haven't noticed any white rot so that should mean I don't have any. I'll go ahead and put the leaks in.
