Flattened!
« on: July 02, 2012, 12:44 »
After a week of scorching temps we eventually had some rain on Saturday night... and it hasn't stopped since.

We had an enormous thunderstorm with massive hailstones, and when i eventually braved the weather on Sunday afternoon, althoughit wasn't complete devastation, I do have some plants which are absolutely decimated, including my "bright lights" chard, carrot and radish seedlings.  A couple of tomato plants were completely horizontal, and more than one had splet.

The cucumbers seemed to have grown a foot in three days, and were then completely battered by the rain, so I don't know if I'll get any cucs (again!)

it seems as if everyone is suffering with the weather recently... so I just thought I'd let you all know... it's not just in the UK ;)

We can commisterate together!

There seems to be no happy medium in weather this year, does there? I know in southern France if hailstones threaten the lavender crops that they fire off special cannons into the air to disturb the hail producing air or whatever. Too bad you don't have your own little cannon.

My son just came from the southern US where it's about 110F in many places, and where people don't have irrigation for whatever reason, crops are simply burning off in fields and gardens. But it's a bumper year for peaches! If the UK would stop hogging all the rain, we've love some because we haven't had any in months and I've had to use our hose regularly. Plus late frosts hit every almost apple orchard in Ontario with 100% losses to most. 90% to others. It's going to be an expensive year for apples.
